Traditional Cutting Styles Of Gemstone Jewelry

December 18th, 2009

It is the cut of a stone that transforms a rough stone into a sparkling and brilliantly colored gemstone. A good cut not only enhances the color and carat of the stone, but it also facilitates it to be set into a jewelry piece. A good and experienced gem cutter can bring out the best characteristics of a stone. Nowadays the cuts on the gemstones are being made by specialized machines but still it could not entirely replace the traditional cutting styles of a gemstone which is what that determines the actual value of a particular gemstone.

There is no ideal cut for colored gemstones like diamond. A brilliant cut of gem stone brings out the maximum carat weight, color intensity of the stone. A good cut can handle the play of light. The stones are either given faceted cuts or non-faceted ones called the cabochon cut.

The oldest and traditionally the most common cut is the cabochon cut. It has a flat base and slightly domed top. “Cabochon” comes form the French word “Caboche” which means head. Mostly, it is oval or round in shape but other shapes like triangles and rectangles can also be seen in this cut. Though any gemstone can be cut into cabochon shape, usually patterned gemstones are cut as this cut show off patterns in the stone. This cut is applied to stones like Jade, Agates. Rubies can also be cut in cabochon shape, mostly opaque ones, but many times these stones are cut with facets as it allows light to shine through. It is also given on gemstones where curved surface highlight characteristics of the stone like the cat’s eye effect, star effect. Buff-top cut is a variant of cabochon cut. It has a domed top but a faceted pavilion, thus it is a mix of facet and non-facet (cabochon) cut. Cabochon cut works on rings, usually with a single stone; pendants and earrings.

Oval and round brilliant cuts provide brilliance and exquisite play of light. In a round brilliant cut, the number of facets is fifty seven. Originally developed for diamonds, round brilliant cut is used for other gemstones also. Among the faceted cuts, antique cushion cut, used in rubies and sapphires mainly, maximizes a gemstones luster. Another old faceted cut is Marquise cut which is almost a stretched oval shape.

Hand cut cabochons can be of all sizes and shapes and no two stones will be alike. Machine cut stones are all identical in shape and size and for jewelry; they can be used in all setting of standard size. Hand cut stones are useful when the standard cuts are not correct. As each stone is different, an artist can use his creativity and create wonderful pieces of jewelry.

Gemstone Jewelry Shopping – How Lighting Affects Gemstone Color

December 17th, 2009

The determining factors of the quality and value of gemstones are clarity, cut, carat weight and color. All four of these factors are determined differently and display themselves in a variety of ways based on lighting. Lighting plays an extremely valuable role when defining the color of any stone. When deciding the final color of a gemstone, mid-morning light is often the most used. It is the whitest form of lighting and has a neutral effect on the color and hue of each individual stone. Most reputable jewelers will provide photos and evidence of the color of each stone through the use of this form of lighting. There are number of ways that light can affect a stone and these should all be considered when investing in a gemstone.

Luminescence is a very influential lighting factor that determines a stone’s color and its quality. Valuable stones have an undeniable ability to somehow display light even in complete darkness. This fluorescence is a very big factor in the price and quality of each individual stone. This should not be confused with phosphorescence which is the ability for the stone to contain light for a few moments after light has been removed from the room. Fluorescence is the capability of the stone to give off light without being given any light to reflect from whatsoever.

Luster within a stone is the term used for a stone’s ability to reflect light both internally and externally. The smoother the surface of a stone is, the more luster it will have and more light reflection it will be able to display.

The ability of a gem to redirect light is classified as refraction. Many gemstone enthusiasts swear by stones that have the ability to change the direction of light and display it in a number of ways. If a gem is dirty or not cut appropriately it will lose most of its refraction ability and damage the value of a stone significantly.

Another important factor in a gemstones ability to be affected by lighting is dispersion. This is classified when a gem can separate light into a number of different colors. When a gemstone can turn neutral light into a rainbow color, it has an excellent dispersion rating and its value will be directly inflated. Usually, games that have a good ability to redirect can also have a high dispersion rating.

Lighting is a very important variable that should be examined and taken into consideration when shopping for or comparing gemstones. A stone can look completely different in a number of lights and you should compare each stone in varying lights in order to determine its true color and value in the most appropriate way. While many stores will only display the stone in the best lighting, you should move it around and change the lighting that the gemstone is under to ensure that you are aware of all the hues and lighting effects that are evident within the stone you are considering investing in.

Gemstone Jewelry Pricing Factors – Gemstone, Design, And Craftsmanship

December 15th, 2009

When it comes to pricing gemstone jewelry, the main factors that are looked into relate to the stone itself rather than the findings. Gemstones are priced using the very specific guide which is famously called the ‘Four Cs’. The four factors, namely, colour, clarity, cut and carat, the most important of these being the color. Even though there are basic colors that we all know of such as sapphires being blue, rubies are red and emeralds are green, there are many gemstones that are very alike in color and it is important to make the correct distinction between them before pricing so that the correct value is being upheld. The general belief is that the brighter and more vibrant the color, the more expensive the stone.

Clarity is the second most important factor that will need to be assessed is the clarity of the stone used in the piece of jewelry. The number of flaws and the clearness of the stone will affect the value placed on the jewelry, as the more clear and transparent the stone, the more value is attached to it. As well as just having an aesthetic affect on the beauty of the stone, cracks and scratches can cause the stone to be weaker and more prone to breaking which, again, will bring down the price and value of the item of jewelry.

The third factor that will affect the pricing of gemstone jewelry is the cut of the stone itself. This is most recognised in the pricing of diamonds as they have vey specific cuts which create different styles and designs. The way that a stone is dealt with as it is processed from its raw natural state through to the finished product has a much marked affect on the value of the end product. The different cuts are designed to show of and amplify certain aspects and characteristics of the stones so that they are shown in the best way possible. Cut styles vary depending on whether the stone is being used for earrings, necklaces or pendants, each type of jewelry requires different shapes and sizes to be used in order for the piece to be designed to fit the style of the jewelry.

The final factor which needs to be assessed when pricing gemstone jewelry is the weight of the stones used. Gemstones are measured in ‘carats’ which is a unit of weight equal to 0.200 grams. The higher the carat of a stone the higher the value will be which will increase the cost of the jewelry.

As well as all these factors being important when pricing gemstone jewelry, there are of course some more aspects that will affect the final price of which an item of jewelry will be sold. The demand of the specific designer and the metal which is used in the findings will affect the price as well as the design specifications and rarity factors.

All of these points will culminate once an item of jewelry has been completed and combine to determine the price of that specific piece of gemstone jewelry.

December 4th, 2009

Gemstones carry many popular stories and beliefs regarding their colorful displays. Each such class of stones may have a distinct crystalline and optical identity to speak of, which shall provide a unique identity to the gemstone jewelry produced from them. As per many popular stories, they are believed to influence the human mind in different ways when adorned as gemstone rings and other ornaments. These stories do have some scientific reasoning as well to rely on, as the human mind is known to react depending on the kind of optical and colorful displays it was exposed to. We are going to examine some of these tale telling facts about gemstones and their influences in the everyday life through the following paragraphs.

We often wear gemstone rings studded with Sapphires or Rubies on different occasions. These stones are basically mineral forms of corundum, an aluminum oxide (Al2O3). The mineral is called Ruby or Sapphire depending on the kind of light it was able to reflect back. A red mineral corundum is always called a Ruby while the rest other shades are classified either as Sapphires or Padparadschais. Gemstone rings should be worn according to one’s zodiac sign, one popular belief says, and Sapphires work out best for those individuals who had an Aquarius sign. In the same way, Ruby is known to calm down aggressive individuals of a particular lineage of stars. Similarly, Opal and Topaz, two more precious stones that manufacturers often try making use of while assembling gemstone jewelry, are known to make individuals of certain stars successful.

Some southwest Indian tribes are widely seen wearing Turquoise to promote healing and good luck and to perform religious ceremonies. Hematite, another metallic gray colored stone, is adorned in the same region as a way to energize one’s bloodstreams, while the brownish red Jasper is believed to nullify one’s negativity. Jasper also gets known for healing up kidney, bladder, spleen and liver ailments and thus plays out the role of a medic. A dark green colored stone named Malachite, is supposed to help in garnering mental insightfulness and arousing the levels of loyalty and fidelity from those around. Another stone named as Adventurine and found in light greens, is often thought to aid people in getting rid of anxiety and garnering a tranquil life in exchange.

Purple colored stones Amethysts are known to help out people in getting rid of their addictive habits and in garnering mental peace. Similarly, Rhodonite is thought to raise up the levels of positive thoughts in one?s life and help out them have emotional soundness. These and many other notions regarding precious stones dictate how people would normally buy gemstone jewelry across the globe. Not only the charm of adorning oneself with lustrous jewels but also the thought of having positive effects is what makes people go in for the ornaments like gemstone rings, bracelets, necklaces etc.

Mystical Power of Gemstones

December 2nd, 2009

Apart from their use as ornamental instruments used in gemstone jewelry, gemstones have been used for remedial purposes in accordance with astrology for centuries. While many make fun of the idea of gems having any influence on us, others have complete faith in this science. But before experimenting with stones, it is important to understand more about them.

How do they work?

To take an example, Jupiter is related with the color BLUE. Most wealthy individuals acquire a strong Jupiter in their horoscopes. If Jupiter is weak in your horoscope, you may be required to balance it out by wearing a natural yellow sapphire or topaz, as yellow stones transmit light blue color waves.

Similarly, Saturn is a very strong planet, and it has an effect on ones work, employment and ageing. While it has a dark, malicious nature, if properly balanced it can also bring great benefits. Saturn transmits its energy through VIOLET waves, which are found in gems like blue sapphires and amethysts.

In this manner, gemstones are used to balance out the influence of planets.

Why gems?

Gemstones are the most natural means of transmitting color waves to your body. They encourage the transmission of pure color, and can be worn permanently, therefore ensuring a constant influence. Thus, when wearing a gemstone, care should be taken to confirm that it is kept in constant contact with the skin, and should not be removed. If wrongly worn, the stones may even have an adverse effect on your health. The blue sapphire is an especially powerful stone, and should not be worn unless and until it suits you.

With the popularity of these gem varieties as a means to make a fortune, the ways in which they are worn have also shown diversities to match fashion trends. Usually, worn in the form of gemstone rings, these stones are now seen as gemstone earrings, pendants and bracelets as well. Sometimes, different gemstones are combined to form a single piece of jewelry as seen in gemstone necklaces.

How to Appreciate the Beauty and Value of Gemstone Jewelry

November 30th, 2009

“Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder”, this famous saying may not hold true in case of gemstones because the outer beauty of the gemstones holds more appeal. These invaluable stones found in the nature behold everyone with their distinguished look. Gemstones are found in nature and few of them actually burn a hole in your pocket as they turn out to be as expensive as owning a vehicle. But nevertheless they are a possession to be proud of.

There are means and ways to evaluate the beauty and value of your gemstones. Few of the chosen and reliable steps to be taken are as follows:

1. Evaluate the carat or weight of the gemstone. Diamonds by virtue are believed to be lighter in density. Hence heavier the diamond, costlier it may be. Similarly for colored gemstones too, the density has to be considered. Ruby is believed to be of higher density than topaz and hence one carat Topaz is smaller than a carat of ruby. The basic knowledge of the density of the gemstone has to be considered while going for it.

2. Authenticity of gemstone has to be established too before purchase. There are synthetically manufactured gemstones available in the market. They are generally very inexpensive and hence one needs to distinguish between the real and the fake one before buying. This fact can be very well established by an expert jeweler or by few gemstone testing laboratories.

3. Authentic gemstone does not necessarily mean an expensive buy. The opaqueness, cut, treatment followed, and many such characteristics decide the value of these precious stones.

4. Generally, collectors and experts believe in picking up gemstones which are flawless. However few theories also pronounce that the presence of a scratch, a flaw or a bubble makes the stone more authentic and natural. These flaws are considered blemish and experts believe that they enhance the overall appeal of the stones.

5. The cut of the stone is another important feature to be considered as it decides the amount of light that a stone reflects. The more the dents present on the stone, the costlier it is.

6. Apart from all this, the color of the stone should not be ignored. It is believed that the deeper the color, the better the stone.

7. Rarity of the stone is another distinguishing feature. It is considered that the rarer the stone, the more is the value. Opaque diamond is rarer than the colored ones and hence more expensive. Similarly few other colored stones are rare to locate and hence are expensive.

These few points should be considered while evaluating gemstones. After all they are a possession worth flaunting and moreover these features help in deciding the insurance value too. Gemologists consider the chemical constitution, flaws, color, weight, cut and many such features before standardizing a gem. We should always go through those reports before investing in these stones.

Ruby – the King of Gemstones

November 28th, 2009

Ruby, one of the most valuable gemstone, belongs to the corundum family and is considered to be the King of Gemstones. Only the red variety of corundum is at liberty to command the title of Ruby, while all other varieties are categorized as Sapphires.

Rubies consist of aluminium oxide and chrome, the latter giving rubies their wonderful color. But chrome is also responsible for creating multitude of fissures and cracks inside the crystals. It is, therefore, rare to find rubies of considerably big sizes. The big sized rarity of rubies is almost always used as a solitaire gemstone rings to mark its significance.

Some rubies display a splendid and glorious silky shine called the “silk” of the gemstone which is caused by the fine needles of rutile. Sometimes the rutile forms a star-shaped deposit within the ruby causing a mesmerizing light effect called asterism. Such rubies are called Star- Rubies and are precious rarities.

By far, the use of ruby in the gemstone jewelry industry was often witnessed in gemstone rings and pendants. The popularity of rubies in gemstone earrings is also gaining momentum in recent times.

The red of the rubies is a hot, passionate and powerful color. Rubies are considered as a perfect way to expresses compassionate and powerful feelings. Engagement Rings set in rubies are, therefore, thought to symbolize passionate love.

The value of a ruby depends on its color and attractiveness of the color. Rubies fall into various categories depending on their color and value. The top most category being the “Burmese Ruby”. It does not necessarily mean that the gemstone is of Burmese origin; it is merely an indication of a rich, full red with slightly bluish hue of the concerned ruby, which is a peculiarity of the stones from the famous deposits of Burma, now Myanmar. The color is sometimes referred to as “pigeon-blood-red”.

Other qualities that are determinants of the value of a ruby are cut, clarity and size, similar to that of other gemstones.
