A Look at Birth Control Options

December 25th, 2009

Are you a woman who is currently unsure as to whether or not you are ready for parenthood? If that is the case, are you currently sexually active? If you are, are you using any form of birth control? Parenting and pregnancy are all important issues, ones that are difficult to back down from. For that reason, if you are not looking to become a mother just yet, it is important that you take the time to familiarize yourself with all of your birth control options. Perhaps, the most popular and most well-known birth control method is that of condoms. Condoms, in most cases, are highly effective against preventing pregnancy. On rare occasions, they can break or leak, but you are typically safe. Just be sure to purchase a brand of condoms that is known for their strength and durability. What is nice about this popular birth control method, is that you are often not only protected against pregnancy, but sexually transmitted diseases as well.

Although condoms are an effective birth control method used by many, there are many women and men who prefer not to use them. If you are not interested in handling the issue of the birth and upbringing of a child, it is important that you take the time to familiarize yourself with the other options that you have for birth control. A few of those other options, outlined below, are ones that may not be as well-known or as popular as condoms, but they are typically just as effective.

Birth control pills are a hormonal form of birth control. Birth control pills require the taking of a pill each and everyday of the month. Birth control pills are known as being effective, as long as they are taken as directed. As with many other medications, birth control pills are not ideal for smokers, as they may cause additional health complications. With a large selection of birth control pills, including ones that eliminate your menstrual period, you are sure to find something that can offer you assistance.

Aside from condoms and birth control, the next most popular form of birth control is another hormonal method. This birth control method is commonly referred to as the Depo shot. The Depo shot has one main downfall and that is that it has been linked to a poor absorption of calcium. That is why many Depo users are urged to take calcium supplements each day. What is nice about the Depo shot is that it is not only effective at preventing pregnancy, but it is also administered on a three-month schedule and periods are often a thing of the past.

Although not as popular as condoms, the Depo shot, and birth control pills, IUDs are also effective forms of birth control. IUDs are known as Intra-Uterine Devices. Intra-Uterine Devices (IUDs) come in a number of different formats, but they are still designed to protect you from pregnancy. This is either done with the use of a copper device, which is spermicidal, or ones that release progestin.

The above mentioned birth control methods are actually just a few of the many that exist, but these birth control methods are designed to prevent pregnancy right from the start. Should you find yourself in an emergency situation, it is important to know that you have a number of different options, including emergency contraceptives. These emergency contraceptives can be obtained through your doctor’s office or your local pharmacy. Despite being able to offer you assistance, it is important that you do not use abortion or even emergency contraceptives as a form of birth control. If that is what you have been doing, you have a whole other set of issues that need to be dealt with.

As a reminder, the above mentioned birth control methods can all help to prevent you from becoming pregnant. With that in mind, the only method of birth control, at this moment, that can protect you from sexually transmitted disease is that of a condom.

Will granite ever go out of style?

December 9th, 2009

This is a good question. Granite is becoming the standard material of choice for countertops across the country. Many times when a product becomes so popular that everyone starts to use it, it can be at risk for going out of style. There are exceptions of course to this. For example, jeans. Jeans have been in style for so long none of us can even remember jeans not being in style. The only thing that has changed over time is colors, cuts, and of course prices (many like the designer high priced jeans).

In order to properly ponder this question, first I would like to explain what granite is and its relation to natural stone. After all, granite is simply a type of natural stone. Natural stone includes granite, soapstone, marble, natural quartz, and other quarried materials that can be made into countertops. The reason why I would like to expand this question to include all natural stone is because stones marketed as granite vary so much it is literally impossible to really group granite as one style choice. For example, there are 100?s of colors of granite. There are honed granites that look like soapstone. There are stones marketed as granite that are really natural quartz that look like marble but are very hard and durable. There are other stones marketed as granite that are so dense and hard that it is impossible to stain them. Those stones are not granites either, but are marketed as granite. Due to this vast array of granite options and how stones that are not granite are marketed as granite (because they are hard and durable), it makes sense to expand the question to natural stone.

Now, we can re ask the question: ?Will natural stone ever go out of style??

The answer to this question is absolutely not. Here is why? natural stone has always, since the beginning of modern civilization, been the material of choice by architects and designers. The only style choice that does change is the type of natural stone that is selected during certain periods. White and Green marbles have historically been popular choices for all types of projects (including countertops) that have gone in and out of style over the years. Shiny versus honed surfaces, colors, and patterns will all go in and out of style. The types of woods that are used for cabinets will go in and out of style as well which will affect the stone options that work best. Since there are so many colors and options with natural stone and virtually no other options that are anywhere near as beautiful as natural stone (after all natural stone actually has semi-precious stones, fossils, and other really neat material embedded in it), it is highly unlikely it will ever go out of style. Natural stone has always been in style throughout our entire history.

In closing, the options for natural stone are so broad and so complete; there will always be a place for natural stone. The important thing to remember is that you select stone colors and woods that work well together. If you decide to choose a trendy style combination of colors and patterns, then your whole look will go out of style when that trend starts to go. If you choose a classic look and stay within the colors and options of that style, the chance of it going out of style is greatly reduced.

Treatment of Kidney Stones – Different Treatment Options for Different Kidney Stones

November 24th, 2009

Kidney stones start out as minute pieces of crystals, formed out of insoluble salt and minerals known as oxalates, which the kidney was not able to excrete through its urine. Often times, this may be due to lack of water intake to keep the stones soluble enough to be washed out.

The treatment of kidney stones is necessary in order to eliminate these particles from the renal system; although the type of treatment to apply depends on the size of the crystals to be taken out. Hence, if you are beginning to feel the early symptoms such as the incessant pain in the lower back and changes in your urine, your doctor may present you with the following treatments:

Treatment of Kidney Stone by Simple Home Therapy and Medications:

Kidney stones that are analyzed as small enough may be treated through water therapy and non-steroidal medications. As a sufferer, you have to drink at least 2 glasses of water for every 2 hours during the day. This will help your urine clear up and make your kidney stones soluble enough to be washed out bit by bit through urination.

The doctor will consider this treatment suitable for you if you are not in any kind of fluid restrictions, as required by some other form of ailments you may be suffering from. In addition, certain types of medicine called alpha blockers may be prescribed by your doctor since they can aid in passing kidney stones with very little or no side effects at all.

However, if your kidney stone is causing you severe pain, it is possible that the stone is already blocking your ureter or the entrance to your urinary tract. This now is one of those instances when the doctor will recommend surgery as your form of treatment.

Treatment of Kidney Stones by Surgery

The following are your treatment options if kidney treatment is no longer possible via home cure:

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL), a treatment where shockwaves are directed at the area where kidney stones were detected. The intensity of the shock waves passing through the body are said to be at certain levels where it can break up a kidney stone into smithereens. These being the case, the patient can now easily pass the kidney stones out of his renal system.

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy or nephrolithotripsy  – This treatment is done through the use of a telescope which the surgeon puts into the kidney by way of making an incision at the patient?s back. By doing this, the surgeon is able to locate the exact position of the kidney stone, which will enable him to perform manual extraction. This type of surgery is often resorted to if the stone is too large to be broken down by the ESWL treatment.

Ureteroscopy ? this time the telescope that the surgeon uses will pass the urinary tract until it reaches the location of the kidney, often found blocking the ureter. During the surgical operation, the doctor will use a small tube to keep the ureter open in order to extract the kidney stone or break it up whichever method is necessary for easier removal.

Open Surgery – The doctor here makes an incision at the side or on the belly area in order to reach the kidney stone for extraction. Due to the high risk of causing further damage to the kidney, this type of treatment is rarely used.

Keep in mind though, that the nature of your lifestyle or diet may cause the re-formation of kidney stones in your system. It is necessary therefore, to be more mindful of what we intake if we do not want to go through the same pain and treatment in the future.

Evaluating Gemstones and Gemstone Jewelry Under The Right Lighting

October 26th, 2009

In the old days, color and light were a much simpler concept to understand. There was natural light from the sun or synthetic light from lamps or fire. Nowadays there are many different sources of light and the options seem endless. Each light will give a different aspect to gemstones and it is important to find the most suitable light in which to grade and evaluate the stones in so that you can discover their true properties. As well as the countless types of light that you can use during evaluation, it is important to remember that a different light may be needed for a different type of gemstone. As well as different levels of brightness, light gives of altering color spectrums and in the gemstone business, the color of light as a function of its temperature is measured in Kelvins (k) which is higher according to the strength of the light and the level of red in the spectrum.

Colored gemstones are worthless without their color and it is very important that their color is judged and graded correctly before purchasing. The color of a gemstone arises from light interacting with the trace materials in the stone. In order for the light to interact with the stone, the light must contain all the colors needed in its spectrum. If the light source does not contain the specific colors then they will not be able to be seen correctly on the gemstone.

As people are becoming more aware of how light affects how we see gemstones, there are more options available from lighting stores that allow specific lamps and bulbs to be purchased for the use in gemstone evaluation. There is a wide variety of lamps available now, each with their own specific qualities which affect how they help to view gemstones. Incandescent lamps are not a good choice for evaluating gemstones as they are high up in the red color spectrum and low in blue, this will affect the color of the gemstone as you view it. Fluorescent lamps are available with a ‘daylight’ bulb which will imitate natural daylight and it is a good light for gemstone evaluation. The newest technology for lamp bulbs are LED, these are a great way to illuminate gemstones as they are low wattage and can imitate daylight in a natural way, without using a lot of power and energy, these lights are generally used in display cases.

The best way to evaluate gemstones will always be in natural daylight, this is not always possible and with all the altering environmental aspects that affect it. Using lamps with specific bulbs that will mimic daylight and can be set to different color grades and Kelvin strength allow evaluation to take place in any given place and with a higher standard for accuracy and precision.
