i’ve been looking everywhere for this answer…maybe I’m not trying hard enough but does anyone know the answer to this…

The meteorite actually was blasted off from the surface of Mars in an impact about 15 million years ago. It moved around the solar system and impacted Earth roughly 13,000 years ago.
It was discovered in Antarctica 1984 and subsequently analyzed. The results were discussed publicly in 1997
I suspect you’re referring to 1996. Back then, a claim was published on evidence supposedly showing there had once been life on Mars. Features on a Martian meteorite were interpreted as showing signs of bacterial activity. This claim failed to stand up to scrutiny. Bear in mind that the linked article doesn’t go into the subsequent criticisms.
